Program Note:

When Caio asked me to write this piece, he told me that he wanted to include it as part of his all-Brazilian program for his Master’s Recital at Rice. Knowing very little about Brazilian music, Caio kindly sent me many pieces, composers, stories, and stylistic explanations of his musical culture. Rather than try to write a piece that fit perfectly into the genre, we discussed how my composition would react to Brazilian music, staying true to my voice, but have influences of Brazilian-ness in it. He compared it to the way his family and many other Brazilians so often welcome outsiders into their homes, eager to share their joy and culture with everyone. The title, Seu Cabra is a nickname that was given to a young, mischievous Caio by his mother and grandmother. The Caio that I know from our time together at Rice is warm and exuberant, both in his playing and self. I tried to capture this spirit that he so contagiously exudes.
